In my years as a retail manager, I faced a constant challenge: hiring, training, and retaining staff in a fast-paced environment with high turnover rates. After much trial and error, I discovered a strategy that not only worked in retail but can be applied to various industries.
Strategic Over-Hiring
My solution? I over-hired, padded my schedules, and meticulously tracked selling costs. This "magic number" helped determine the optimal staffing levels for profitability. Too many hours on the schedule meant going over budget, while too few hours led to missed sales opportunities due to understaffing.
Building Brand Awareness
Recognizing the importance of brand awareness in recruiting, I began presenting to student groups interested in long-term careers within the retail industry. This not only connected our brand with potential future employees but also highlighted our commitment to career development.
Tailored Interviewing Process
